Man Utd in talks for major revamp of Old Trafford

Manchester United has been speaking with engineering and construction firms to develop a plan to modernise its stadium at Old Trafford.

Chief operating officer Collette Roche said the club had held initial meetings with several companies and talks were under way to develop a masterplan for the redevelopment.

“We are hoping to appoint our preferred partners in the coming weeks; following this, we will be able to formally kick off phase one of the project, which will be focused on establishing the vision and objectives for the masterplan,” said Roche.

Plans for redevelopment were revealed by senior representatives speaking at a fan forum last month.

The club’s director of media relations and public affairs, Andrew Ward, said that although companies had presented their credentials as potential partners, the full scope for the project had not been finalised. He added: “It is too early to speculate about costs and financing models.”

Operations director for the venue Jim Liggett said work on the tunnel area was on the agenda and that scope options would be presented soon.

Old Trafford is currently the largest football stadium in the English football league, with a seating capacity of 74,140. The 112-year-old stadium has not undergone a major redevelopment since 2006.

Manchester United is the latest Premier League club to announce its desire to expand its stadium. Earlier this month, Aston Villa revealed it was pushing ahead with expansion plans.
