Royal Bam Group’s Dutch civil engineering company, Bam Infra Nederland, has commissioned Wirtgen and New Electric to convert an asphalt spreading machine into the world’s first fully electric paver.
Bam said using it would save 150l of diesel a day and prevent some 93 tons of CO₂ and 115kg of nitrogen oxide entering the atmosphere a year.
The conversion team replaced the paver’s stage V motor with an electric drive consisting of a fixed battery of 270kWh and two smartly switched electric motors.
Fully charged, the paver can be used for up to 10 hours at a time. Bam said it also makes “considerably less noise than current machines”.
With a newly charged battery, the paver can be moved to the next project after a long working day.
Bam built the world’s first electric roller in 2020. Some 90% Bam Infra Nederland’s plant runs on stage V engines fueled by hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), and Bam aims to have the first completely emissions-free asphalt set on the road by the middle of this year.
